In this guide we are about to start with how to install Git on Centos, RHEL, Oracle 6 Linux versions.

Install the required dependencies

# yum install curl-devel expat-devel gettext-devel openssl-devel zlib-devel -y

# yum install gcc perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker -y

Download the latest git tar file from kernel.org.

# cd /usr/local/

# wget https://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/git-2.11.0.tar.gz

Extract under /usr/local/

# tar -zxvf git-2.11.0.tar.gz
# cd git-2.11.0

Compile and install

# make prefix=/usr/local/git all
# make prefix=/usr/local/git install
# echo “export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/git/bin” >> /etc/bashrc
# source /etc/bashrc

Check for the version using

# git –version
