When we are trying to extract some tar file in Solaris server’s if we receive below error message it can be resolve by using gtar, let us see how to extract a file using gtar.

# tar xvf NetBackup_7.6.0.1_Solaris.tar

tar: ././@LongLink: typeflag 'L' not recognized, converting to regular file
x ././@LongLink, 103 bytes, 1 tape blocks
x NetBackup_7.6.0.1_Solaris/NBClients/anb/Clients/usr/openv/netbackup/client/INTEL/FreeBSD6.0/PBX.tar., 8964614 bytes, 17510 tape blocks

Use gtar to extract the tar file as shown below.

# /usr/sfw/bin/gtar –version

# /usr/sfw/bin/gtar xvf NetBackup_7.6.0.1_Solaris.tar

This will resolve the above Longline L flag error.
